A Brief History of Marijuana

Are you a weed enthusiast like we are? Then you’ll find the history of marijuana use fascinating. Long before people had to worry about getting detox kits for weed or undergoing a temporary weed detox to pass a drug test, people around the world were cultivating marijuana. While some countries were using it recreationally and others medicinally, the earliest known origins go all the way back to 2737 BC, spreading from China to India and then to North Africa. Marijuana is thought to be first used in Europe as early as AD. The first writings about marijuana appear from Chinese emperor Shen Nung, and he discussed its powers as a medication for rheumatism, gout, malaria, and absent-mindedness. (Source)

Of course, when Europeans began colonizing the Americas, they brought weed with them (thus, avoiding a weed detox due to traveling!). According to the History channel, “Because it’s a fast-growing plant that’s easy to cultivate and has many uses, hemp was widely grown throughout colonial America and at Spanish Missions in the Southwest. In the early 1600s, the Virginia, Massachusetts, and Connecticut colonies required farmers to grow hemp. These early hemp plants had very low levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the chemical responsible for marijuana’s mind-altering effects.” (Source)

So, given the importance of the hemp crop and its widespread use around the world, you may be wondering how exactly we got to the point where weed is criminalized and people have to worry about detox kits for weed in order to pass (somewhat arbitrary) drug tests to play by the rules.

It all started after the Mexican Revolution in the early 1900s. The influx of Mexican immigrants indeed brought their culture with them, including customs, language, foods, and weed used as a relaxant. Although people in the US were widely using cannabis medicinally in tinctures, the Mexicans referred to the plant as “marihuana”, and the demonization of it began there as a way to deport Mexicans. Marijuana was painted as a dangerous psychoactive drug being introduced by disruptive Mexicans, and this marketing smear worked. Despite most Americans having marijuana in their medicine cabinets, they began fearing how “dangerous” marijuana was and supported the deportation of Mexicans who possessed it. (Source)

After a few decades of this, the Marijuana Act of 1937 was created, and then Nixon’s War on Drugs took it a step further by enforcing weed as a Schedule I substance in the Controlled Substances Act.

Now, here we are, slowly chipping away at restrictive legislation and making small gains in the (re)legalization of weed. But until it’s a widespread legalization, we still (unfortunately) have to worry about drug tests and the repercussions of those.
